The professional heavy infantry of the Roman empire, it can be argued that there was no finer fighting force in history, based on the sheer amount of territory they conquered and time in which it remained in Rome’s possession. More than just soldiers, they built roads and bridges and administered an empire. Commonly equipped with helmet, armour, shield, a pack and provisions, they carried javelins, a gladius sword and dagger into battle. This relatively simple and standardised equipment, combined with their excellent training, made them fierce opponents. Roman Legionaries feared failure and disgrace more than the spears of their foes.
